Cigar Aficionado magazine has named the 2012 BMW 3-series a top luxury car in the April 2012 edition. The magazine says that the new 3-series “looks as elegant and sophisticated as many models costing significantly more.”

Circle BMW shoppers will notice several enhancements made to the 3-series lineup. Cigar Aficionado took notice of these enhancements calling the new design cues an “evolutionary approach to styling.”

The new styling includes a longer 3-series sedan that is wider and roomier. On the inside, the cockpit is also revamped to pamper drivers with more luxury craftsmanship, comfort and convenience.

Most notably, Cigar Aficionado points out that BMW “found a way to deliver BMW caliber performance while still recognizing that even luxury buyers want better mileage.”

The new 3 Series features EfficientDynamics, a combination of systems designed to minimize fuel consumption. An automatic start-stop function is one such feature and it comes standard with both manual and automatic transmissions. This system automatically switches off the engine at traffic lights or in stationary traffic. It’s joined by BMW’s Brake Energy Regeneration system, which powers the alternator only during braking or overrun.

Of greater importance still is the Eco Pro mode for the Driving Experience Control unit. BMW reckons this alone is capable of reducing fuel consumption by as much as 20 percent.
